Hey adventurer!

A couple of months ago, I read “Listen for the Lie” by Amy Tintera, and I loved it! It’s been an interesting read with hard topics explored.

The plot

The main character, Lucy, thought she killed her best friend, or so everyone around her (but her grandma) thought. Lucy didn’t remember what happened that night, only that she was covered in her best friend’s blood and her friend was dead.

That’s a hell of a premise. Now, years later, we have a true crime podcast discussing Lucy’s case and seeking an interview with Lucy, as they aim to solve the case. I didn’t know what to expect from the book, only that it was highly rated on Goodreads. I am so happy that I decided to read it. This book fits into my 52 Book Challenge 2025 under the prompt 19: Has short chapters.

Trigger warnings

Do read the triggers for the book; it’s a ride that includes topics of physical and mental abuse, sexual assault, stalking, attempted murder, and murder.

Feelings about the plot (spoilers!)

I did enjoy the plot of the book and the majority of the characters (outside of Matt (Lucy’s ex-husband) and Emmett (stalker dude), of course). I did not see the plot twist coming, but I did expect that Lucy did not do it. I liked her so much by the end that I’m not sure I would have cared, lol. Grandma was probably one of my favorite characters. Having a support system like that is a true gift. I also enjoyed the romantic subplot, I am surprised how much I did enjoy tbh, considering the topics the book dealt with. It was interesting and sad to see the dynamics between Lucy and her ex-husband even after the divorce. It’s not something I personally ever had to deal with, so being in the head of someone who was so severely abused was eye-opening and difficult.

Overall, I found the book quite enjoyable. It was filled with humorous moments, and I think Amy Tintera did a great job weaving light-heartedness into a story that also tackles heavy themes.

See you next!
